Deepwater HPHT Subsea Trees by FMC Technologies Subsea Systems, FMC’s 15,000 psi, 350F, High-Pressure, High-Temperature (HPHT) subsea completion systems are the most technically advanced oil and gas solutions in the world, and FMC Technologies is the world’s leading supplier of subsea HPHT solutions. Two of the company’s largest customers, BP and Shell, have successfully deployed this new technology in the Gulf of Mexico. The modular design approach allows for reconfiguration to meet worldwide customer requirements. The temperature extremes associated with subsea HPHT systems required material solutions never before used in the oil and gas industry. The FMC materials science group developed Novolastic HT, a silicone based rubber insulation that keeps the latent heat of wellbore fluids from congealing at the seafloor due to the frigid effects of deepwater temperatures. Novolastic HT is the only insulation on the market that can withstand the higher temperatures associated with HPHT systems. A new 15,000 psi control pod was developed to upgrade electronic protocols, expand data collection and provide precise control and feedback of high-energy (high pressure, short reaction time) equipment and chemical distribution. The HPHT design ensures safety shut-in of over 20 functions within 45 seconds. The controls team also had the chalenge of providing a "best in class" workover control system for one of the largest and most sophisticated dynamically positioned drillships in the world, complete with quick disconnect and failsafe, operated by acoustics. The ManTIS (subsea manifold and tie-in systems) group pioneered manifold and flowline jumper technology for HPHT service. FMC engineering developed floating pipe manifold designs, sliding sled end terminations, and jumper connections to withstand torsional effects from relative motion for the entire field. To date, FMC Technologies has the first producing deepwater subsea HPHT system in the world with the Shell Princess project. With 9 installations during 2004 in the GOM, FMC is the dominant supplier of subsea HPHT systems.
